Half Marathon

On Sunday 6th March the seventeenth Eastbourne Half Marathon took place in dry but chilly and windy conditions. Our Homes For Homeless project was one of the benefitting charities and flying the flag from the front was our indefatigable 80 something President, Brian O’Neil, who completed the 13.1 miles in just over four hours, and is still fit and well to tell his story:

I am afraid I only walked. I initially planned to jog/walk the course, but after my first jogging session my replacement left knee reminded me of the surgeon’s instructions not to bounce down on it. My intention was to finish and not aim for a PB, hence my time of just over four hours. After the run I didn’t feel any ill effects and thankfully non have appeared since. I am counting my blessings. Maybe I will go in training for next year’s event! I would like to thank all the kind friends who sponsored me.

Whilst not making huge amounts I would think I raised around the £500.00 mark which when doubled up will be worth the enjoyable Sunday walk. I would also thank my family, two of whom flew down from Glasgow to take part and one drove over from Sevenoaks. My youngest son, Brendan, acted as my ‘carer’ and he walked the full course with me. He annoyed me most of the way as I was trying to catch my breath whilst he was whistling and humming his way round; extremely annoying!

I would like to add a huge ‘thank you’ to all the Club members who acted as Marshals on a chilly day. Without you the event couldn’t happen.
